The Journey

I had to write about them really.

The main reason is that their journey has been my journey too.

I remember when I first started teaching. The lessons I prepared. The lessons that were observed. The mistakes I made. The inappropriate things I said. The inexperienced approach. The struggles. The trials.

So it was for them too.

They were in Year 9. I was a naive 27-year-old. Teaching was new to me. Being a teenager was new to them.

And now they are men…of sorts anyway!

This is why I’m going to miss this particular year in a different way to all the others: the observation and experience of their progression. For example, there is one boy I taught for five consecutive years from Key Stage 3 Geography to GCSE Business to A-Level Business.

There is something incredibly satisfying about contributing to someone’s progress in this way. It’s the reason (that gets forgotten all too quickly) why I became a teacher.

They should also know that they contributed to me in their way too.

For this I am truly grateful.

I like to think they’ll remember me too.

Actually – not so much remember me, as remember something I taught them.

May they go on to live their lives as they want and make cool things happen.

Maktub.

  1. Hell, we had our moments.I’ll probably remember you as “that guy who wrote a set of lyrics to the tune of Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive’ about me”It’s something of a mouthful, but I doubt anyone else will ever do it…Kudos, you opinionated motherfucker.

  2. Is that all you’ll remember me for? That song wasn’t really about you – but about all students! The thing I’ll remember most is you being one of the two who got all the film references……and lessons that go off the point…

  3. I remember it being prefixed with “I wrote a song about you”, but then again, who the hell am I to argue?I kid of course, I’ll remember you for much more than that. Those psychology lessons really were jam packed with geeky references weren’t they…

  4. I remember it being suffixed with ‘the song’s about all students really’.I promise to watch The Sopranos and The Wire over the summer.Where’s your other geek-in-crime?

  5. My partner in geek is currently revising, so he can get some “qualifications” and “succeed in life”. I haven’t seen him in days.Dick… Anyway, I suppose I’ll see you again when I have a psychology exam to sit. The good news is, I’m actually doing some revision, and should get that C.If you say anything about me ‘being an A grade student’, I’ll cut you the fuck up.I obviously won’t, but it’s a blog comment board, if there’s one place I can look tough, it’s here…

  6. From The Biggest G Of Them All…. Guess Who????Sir im not going to lie, your full of shit, na ur a cool guy, id even say you are a bit of a mushroom……….. a fun-guy lolIll always look back on our lessons as a big train wreck but we learnt some cool and important stuff along the way Butttttttttt till the day i may never learn how to evaluate, learn how to teach it properly. This may give my identity away but peace out A town down xxx
